Ebook About
Rabid readers. Backbiting authors. A romance convention from hell.Shaw Aldrich and his best friend, boyfriend, and partner, North McKinney, are doing great, thanks. The aftermath of their search for the Slasher has finally settled down. Their private investigation agency is thriving. And after years of missed opportunities, they’re finally together. Sure, work might be taking up every spare minute, and their time together as a couple might have evaporated—but that’s normal, right? When an author asks for their help investigating threats against a gay romance convention, Shaw sees an opportunity to shake up their routine and maybe have some fun. But the convention isn’t what he expects. Between the rabid fans and the backbiting authors, the death threats—which seem totally baseless—are the least of North and Shaw’s worries.Until, that is, a bestselling author is poisoned in the middle of a panel. Then Shaw and North must race against the clock to find the killer before he (or she) escapes—and before the convention ends. But romance authors are more complicated than either North or Shaw expects, and a treacherous web knits the suspects together.Shaw and North will have to unravel a skein of lies and half-truths to uncover the killer. It doesn’t help that, on top of everything else, Shaw just wants to find his next favorite book—and, if it isn’t asking too much, have sex with North at least one more time in his current incarnation.Indirection is the first book in a follow-up series; read North and Shaw’s first adventures in The Borealis Investigations, beginning with Orientation.

Book Indirection (Borealis: Without a Compass Book 1) Review :

The second Borealis series find North and Shaw consolidating their relationship and their detective agency. But the circus is in town, and they end up caught in the show.A round of applause for Mr. Ashe, who builds a mistery within the colourful world of gay romance writers, readers, and reviewers, all brought together for the annual gay romance conference — called, for the purposes of the book, „Queer Expectations“. What begins like a publicity stunt, pulled by the organiser of the conference, in order to up the show, ends up as a full investigation. A famous writer falls victim to a mischievous deed and the abilities of the two young detectives are needed.A thriller focused on the literary world is a great premise for a book, and Mr. Ashe rises to the challenge with humour. All debates one hears about on twitter or on the fan sites are — to an extent — represented in the book. The quest for authenticity, the type of content the books offer and readers look for, the blind race to success and the chase to understand its mechanism, even the speech throwing the genre to the bin altogether, in the name of lack of literary value, all are brought forward by various characters.Just like in Wonderland, nobody escapes the magic. Men, women, young, old, all are chasing the perfect story recipe that will bring them (and keep them) in the charts.Ashe moves carefully between his characters, spreading the net of clues, while unveiling writers who hate one another to such extent that they manage to become all suspects.Add to this the bacchanalian atmosphere of the event (there are crowns made of penises, the dancing people, towers made of diapers, an old lady who avidly watches gay porn, and the surprising presence of a character who, in spite of all previously written novels of the genre, does not become gay when locked in a room with another guy.As for the main characters, in addition to solving the current mystery of the literary gay world, they continue to work on their relationship and to figure out what their plans for the agency are. Pari weighs in to help Shaw understand North is human, but worth the effort.Altogether, the book is fun and colourful like a gay parade. And brave.
Wow! This kept me guessing until the very end. It was an extremely well-written mystery romance in a genre that is generally better known for its sex scenes than well thought out whodunnits. I got a kick out of everything about the convention. I’m sure some people will feel offended and like they’re being made fun of, but I feel it was all done with humorous intent and not to be malicious. After all, conventions that celebrate various forms of entertainment, whether it be a gay romance convention or Comic Con, attract the quirky and the sedate, all of whom (we hope) can have good senses of humor and not take themselves too seriously. Ashe added in an ongoing angle that I’m not sure how I feel about. It isn’t necessary to get me to read the next book and felt a bit tacked on at the end, even if it was setup early on. Overall, I thought it was very original and funny, and I was glad to see these characters again.
